HSE update: ear loop respirators/masks do not provide protection as tight fitting RPE

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have issued a safety update about ear loop respirators/masks, stating that they do not provide protection as tight fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE). Ear loop respirators/masks do not provide protection as tight fitting RPE – HSE

Safety update

Research undertaken by the HSE has found that masks which reply on ear loops to hold the mask in place, do not protect people adequately when used as tight fitting RPE. This includes masks that are provided with clips, ‘snuggers’ or other means of tightening the mask.

These masks are not suitable for FFP2 level protection, as FFP2 require a good seal with the wearer’s face, which is unlikely to be achieved with ear loops.

Steps to take

If your workplace has identified the need for tight fitting RPE, to manage exposure to hazardous substances, it’s recommended that you:

  • check if your RPE provision is adequate, suitable for the user and their activities
  • discontinue using ear loop respirators/masks as tight fitting RPE
  • provide appropriate RPE, and have this fit tested by a competent assessor
