## Article

Start with what DSEAR expects in practice

Inspectors look for evidence that you have:

- identified dangerous substances and scenarios
- assessed fire and explosion risk
- implemented controls that eliminate/reduce risk
- where explosive atmospheres may occur: zoning, suitable equipment selection, marking zones, and verification before use

What to prepare before an assessment (or inspection)

1) Substance inventory and SDS

List all flammables and dusts. Include:

- cleaning products
- aerosols
- fuels
- powders and ingredients
- waste streams
- anything decanted or mixed

2) Process and site drawings

- layout plans
- process flow diagrams
- dust extraction schematics
- storage arrangements
- ventilation details

3) Maintenance and inspection records

Especially for:

- ATEX-rated equipment (where applicable)
- dust collectors
- earthing/bonding
- motors, bearings, conveyors

Enforcement examples show inspection gaps can become ignition control failures.

4) Evidence that actions are owned and tracked

A report is not control. Inspectors care whether:

- actions are assigned
- changes were made
- controls are sustained

5) Contractor and non-routine work controls

Permit-to-work, hot work, isolation, and cleaning arrangements.

What makes an assessment “high value” for Operations

A great DSEAR is one your engineering and maintenance teams can use:

- clear zoning where needed
- clear rules for equipment selection
- clear actions that reduce risk quickly
- minimal fluff, maximum clarity

The advantage of an experienced assessor

This is where your FY27 focus pays off: seasoned consultants spot the real-world failure modes that less experienced assessors miss, and they avoid creating bureaucracy that slows operations.

If you want a DSEAR that your ops team will actually use, we can run a scoping visit first and confirm what will be assessed, what evidence we need, and what the outputs will look like.
