**HSE has released its 2018/19 business plan that sets out its agenda for enforcement and strategic actions. What can you expect and how might you be affected?**

**Overview**
There’s no doubt that 2018/19 is going to be an interesting year for many organisations.

In its [Business Plan](http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/strategiesandplans/businessplans/plan1819.pdf), the HSE outlines its commitments and specific priorities for the year ahead. In summary, it appears that although it will be working hard to ensure a **smooth transition after Brexit**, it won’t be taking its eye off the ball; research programmes, campaigns, involvement in cyber security, public safety and routine inspections are all on the agenda.

**Targeted Inspections**
Will inspectors be so tied up with red tape that they won’t have time to drop in unexpectedly on your doorstep? Don’t count on it. In 2017 the HSE conducted**targeted inspections** on approximately **20,000 workplaces**; principally those which were known to be higher risk due to incidents or past inspections. It aims to carry out a**similar number in 2018/19**.

**Healthy Living**
Health continues to be the focus and be the highest priority on the HSE’s agenda with promises to maintain momentum in its campaign [Helping Great Britain work well](http://www.hse.gov.uk/strategy/strategy-document.htm). The aim of this strategic campaign is to drive forward change by co-operative action with industry leaders, businesses, and unions.

Aligned with this are the Health and Work programmes which are more traditional HSE-led campaign which targets key topics. The focus areas for 2018/19 are:

- [Musculoskeletal disorders](http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/strategiesandplans/health-and-work-strategy/musculoskeletal-disorders.pdf)
- [Occupational lung disease](http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/strategiesandplans/health-and-work-strategy/occupational-lung-disease.pdf)
- [Work-related stress](http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/strategiesandplans/health-and-work-strategy/work-related-stress.pdf)

If you receive a visit from a safety inspector, be prepared to explain how you manage any risks in these areas.
